When your hand goes up to give someone the finger, change it to a shaka sign.
Watch OC 16 or the local shows on the other channels. ‘Hawaii TV Bowling’ has more thrills than the Super Bowl. And less nudity.
If you don’t know any pidgin, learn some. It could save your life. I don’t know how, but it could.
“No Shirt, No Shoes, No Service”? Not in the Islands. Enjoy these freedoms by shopping shirtless and shoeless whenever possible.
Demand that our TV stations start showing episodes a week behind the Mainland again. This will reinforce the feeling of ‘no hurry’.
Keep calling stores and places by their old name, like Liberty House and Holiday Mart. Some of us like to go back even further. There’s one guy who, when he goes to Ala Moana Center, says ‘I’m going to that swamp across from Ala Moana Park’. Now that’s local.
How about this proposition?: The state should require that new residents of the Islands be paired up with a longtime local who will live with them for the first few months. This professional Islander will teach the malihini(s) about life here and how to take part in it.
If the malihini doesn’t take to local culture after that, a tougher approach will be taken. The newcomer will get another houseguest Akebono. If the intimidation doesn’t change their minds, the food bill will.
Every once in a while, track some red dirt in your home. Just for fun.
Joking aside, how about some new policies to help us all cope with traffic and stress? What if our local government encouraged employers to institute telecommuting, for at least some of their staff? Or staggering start times so certain people could begin work at 9 or 10 AM?
These measures probably won’t solve the overall problem we now have with traffic congestion, but they might offer some relief. And that would be a first step we’ve taken toward relieving this pressure in a long time.
