Campaign Kicks Off To Recognize ‘Keel Haole Day’ As State Holiday
- Effort Led By Haole
A new effort has begun to make the traditional ‘Keel Haole Day’ a State Holiday for Island residents. Despite the rough origins of this tradition, the holiday would take the form of a statewide exercise in fun and togetherness.
Supporters of this movement will be downtown on Friday, July 28th at lunchtime to get petitions backing the change signed. This is merely the first step toward preserving unique local culture for future generations. With rapid changes and growth going on, it is crucial that we start protecting the Island way of life before it is slips away.
We shudder to think of a future where the shaka sign is meaningless to the keiki of Hawaii.
